“Dream Walk,” Fitzpatrick/Firecloud Mysteries Book 4 by Melissa Bowersock

As far as readers are concerned, it is unfortunate that “Dream Walk” will be the last of the highly enjoyable Lacy Fitzpatrick and Sam Firecloud Mystery Series. From a critical point of view, it is probably the best move. The overarching romantic plotline of the series has come to its inevitable conclusion. Since that provided a good deal of the interest and fun in all the stories, once it is finished the series is best left complete, all loose ends tied up, a great idea for a gift box set later.

And this was a good one to go out on. It is one of the best books of the series. The who-dunnit plotline – Lacey and Sam follow up a dream contact from a dead relative of his – is clear, tense and well thought out, with a great action climax. The sexual tension between the two main characters is beautifully crafted and completely believable. Their whole relationship rolled exactly the way it should have (complete with the odd bump and skid, of course).

Like “Skin Walk,” the second of this series, the subject matter is a bit more serious – murders in the drug trade – but the more gentle and romantic tone of the series continues throughout, so while it doesn’t quite fit in the Cozy Mystery genre, it has similarities.

In all, a great finale to a fun series. Highly recommended for Mystery fans, especially of the Cozy Mystery variety, all the way down to the YA age group.
