Here are several bits of analysis that reveal what’s going on behind the scenes at the White House these days.
First, there was a deal on the table from early in the war, set out by Biden. At that time, Netanyahu wasn’t interested. Biden was an enlightened democratic leader. He had no chance of securing peace.
Trump wasn’t interested, either. He only got involved when Netanyahu bombed Qatar. You know, Trump’s financial supporters. The ones that gave him the plane, remember? So, he made a big show of his peace plan and got Netanyahu to stop expanding the war. That was the only success Trump had, and the Israeli leader was still fully in charge of the timeline.
Second was the Nobel prize. Trump actually thought he could get it. He couldn’t, for two reasons; he doesn’t deserve it, and the prize process takes a while — months, probably. His “success” occurred the week before the award was given. His two-year-old tantrum when he didn’t get it will probably ensure he never does, but that’s a side issue.
Third, take a step back and look at the situation. Netanyahu wants to crush HAMAS. He starts a genocidal war. USA backs him, although Biden isn’t happy. Enter the new president. He’s a firm believer in war. I have no doubt that he and Netanyahu had a secret timeline. When the Yahoo was satisfied that he had milked the war for as much as he could get away with, he would stop and give Trump the credit. But Netanyahu was fully in charge.
Put another way, when you’re the number one supporter of the guy who started the war, you can’t take much credit when the war ends.
Lastly, it’s a matter of staying power. Trump isn’t interested in the slog required to create peace, rebuilding the lives, politics and economics of the Palestinian people. He’s with Netanyahu on the genocidal end of the scale.
Another side note. Trump’s solution to the Yahoo’s corruption charges? “Pardon him.” Typical of Trump to assume his buddy is guilty. Don’t deal with the legal solution. Ignore the courts; jump to the authoritarian fix and duck out on paying for the crime. Donny’s been doing it all his life.
The Bottom Line: Why is This Important?
Because people who really want peace in the Middle East must realize they can’t count on American help. Common wisdom has it that Trump’s main objective in life right now is to avoid the release of the infamous Epstein Papers. If the proponents of peace are going to get any help from him, it will all depend on whether their proposed action will help him attain that personal goal.
Maybe they’ll have to wait until the next round of Peace Prizes are being given out.
