The one silver lining in the Canadian political scene right now is that when real danger threatens from outside chaos, Canadians opt for sanity and cooperation.
The Tariff Malarky
The business wing of the Republicans isn’t made of stupid people. The sudden postponement of the tariff plan was because of pushback from the business community. “Hey, buddy, we didn’t buy you the election so you could destroy the economy.”
Another example of the Right Wing Dilemma: What appeals to the Social Right clashes with the designs of the Commercial Right. May the divide grow and prosper.
Pouting Poilievre
The Leader of the Opposition has been keeping a low profile, while the Governing Party has imploded in the polls. He has purposefully done and said nothing of importance. Why jeopardize his tentative hold over his divided party? Note his unwillingness to upgrade his security clearance to deal with secret papers in the election interference case.
Well, that has come back to bite him. Now Trudeau, Freeland, and Carney are touting their experience in these matters and acting like leaders, and he has no platform to refer to. Liberal leaders are showing Canadians how to work together, while Pierre has only negatives to contribute. As Andrew Coyne noted on At Issue the other night, Poilievre has been auditioning for Leader of the Opposition for the last couple of years. If he’s not careful, he might succeed.
National Anthems
Okay, it’s not very classy to boo the other team’s anthem, but in one respect, it’s completely appropriate. Think about communication. Our Prime Minister deals with their President. Our Premiers deal with their Governors, and our hockey fans say the same thing to their hockey fans. We’re getting the message across effectively at all levels!
The Bottom Line
The last piece of good news: we have our flag back. The Forces of Idiocy followed the American trick and stole our national symbol to promote their thoughtless selfishness. As a result, nobody would fly the flag because they might be mistaken for a nutcase.
Now everybody is waving the flag, and it has returned to being a rallying symbol that unifies the whole country. We need a lot of that.
