The writing is on the wall; the Democrats need a new candidate. But there’s no time for a newcomer to pick up the ball and make a decent run. Kamala Harris on her own doesn’t have the polling numbers, at least not at the moment.
On top of that is the huge number of Democrats that still support Biden, who will righteously be disgruntled at dropping a valuable candidate because he stuttered. And then there’s all those primaries that Biden has already won. What are those delegates to do?
But old-fashioned loyalty has little to do with the political decision. The Presidential Debate is there for a reason, and for better or worse, it fulfilled that purpose. Biden showed weakness where the Democrats needed strength, and that matters to the electorate. End of story.
So, What to Do?
The Democrats need a new candidate with a strong power base. America wants stability. They want continuity. Several online pundits have suggested the Democrats’ best attack line is to remind people of the Bizarro Trump years. Contrast it to the last four years of relative calm and economic growth.
The Solution? The Tried-and-True
Run the Biden/Harris team again, with one small tweak. Make it Harris/Biden instead.
Why Not?
Biden is an experienced VP. He acted the elder statesman when Obama was considered too inexperienced. He can walk into the nominating convention and give all his candidates to Harris. The Democrats can get behind the pair of them. America needs stability at home so it can deal with the real threats in the rest of the world.
The Bottom Line
It is a tradition thousands of years old, and deeply imbedded in human society. The older generation steps willingly aside in favour of the younger and more vigorous, and stays on in an honoured and vital advisory capacity. Here’s to Harris and Biden in 2024!
