Writers are always looking for a hook to hang their next book on. It seems that Kerry Greenwood has a connection in the choir business, because her latest Phryne Fisher novel rotates around the rehearsals for a performance of Mendelssohn’s “Elijah”. And around and around. With rounds. And duets, and quintets, and plainchants. By the time you finish this book, you’re going to know a whole lot more about choral music and choristers than you really wanted. Unless you’re a chorister yourself.

Kerry Greenwood’s mother must have been frightened by a conductor while she was pregnant, because the conductor is the real villain in this piece. At least he was, before he was murdered. And then there’s his replacement…I’ll leave it to you to read and find out.

The other element that stands out in this novel is the love story. It is unconventional to say the least, and Phryne solves it by using a most creative non-sex scene. Unfortunately, the denouement of this subplot happens too early in the book, and Greenwood is left with nothing for the two lovers to do than spend the rest of the story in saccharine bliss. A bit overdone, even for Phryne’s usual “feel good” plots.
I have always though of the Phryne Fisher series as being a little too spicy for the “cozy” detective genre, but this story is salted with pleasant domestic scenes in Phryne’s household and sweet little intrigues with her adopted children and other members of the ménage. Greenwood has moved away from social issues, cruelty and the actual solving of murders, and is concentrating much more on the interesting ancillary material. This is a much softer book than the rest of the Phryne Fisher series, but a fun read nonetheless.
Recommended for fans of “cozy” detective mysteries and choral music. And everybody else who wants a fun, uplifting and escapist read.

Unless you’re married to a conductor.
