Playing With Matches

We’re Always Playing Catch-Up

Earlier in the week, it looked like Donald Trump actually thought he could perform diplomacy. The question has always  been open whether he’s a genius or a fool, and we got a good idea at the G-7. His personality may have once included a good dose of clever manipulator, but it looked like he had bought into the role he created so completely he would disregard his own self-interest for the sake of maintaining the charade.

What’s He Gonna Do Next?

The trepidation felt by everyone going into the G-7 was well-deserved. Trump was coming off a disastrous week, with his washed-out parade endangering his image with the people he depends on most: his cult followers. I was quite ready  for him to show up at the international meeting and throw his weight around in his usual news-creating fashion, perhaps picking on a victim to bully. Which could well have been Canada.

However, he made the risky move to put the tariffs on hold — They are losing their news punch — and leave the conference early in order to play the international peacemaker. Thus leaving the serious diplomats to sit down together and make their plans how to deal with the menace. Of course, they haven’t told us what they decided, but I hope they did their job well. The only solution to a bully is well-thought out unity between his victims.

If he wasn’t so damn dangerous, he’d be pathetic. To think, that guy’s got the keys to America’s nuclear arsenal. Talk about kids playing with matches.

And Then Came Saturday

Now he has shown us what he really wanted to do to bolster his sliding reputation. Elon musk can only blow up a rocket. Trump can trigger the whole middle east. And that’s just window dressing. When he gets home, he has a much darker and more comprehensive plan for America.

The Bottom Line

It’s the same problem for law enforcement everywhere. They’re always reacting, waiting until the criminal acts before they can bring the ponderous weight of the legal system to bear. We’re holding our collective breath as to how much damage Trump can do between the time he gets his anti-democratic legislation passed and when the judiciary tears it to shreds. That’ll be the first hundred days all over again.

Remember, he’s light on his feet and an expert at keeping everyone off balance.
